There’s nothing like a nosy gnat or mosquito to spoil a refreshing dip in the pool. Keeping an above ground pool bug-free isn’t impossible though—with these simple changes, you can get quickly back to uninterrupted swimming and floating.
Plant a Bug-Repellent Garden
Wearing bug spray helps, but strategic landscaping also counts. Get rid of backyard hiding spots by keeping the grass mowed, shrubbery trimmed and by removing any overhanging branches. Plant these fragrant herbs around the pool area to prevent pests:
- Eucalyptus
- Mint
- Rosemary
- Lavender
- Lemon balm
- Basil
- Sage
- Fennel

Eliminate Stagnant Water
Most insects, like mosquitoes, are not interested in the pool itself but the presence of still or slow-moving water. The following steps can be checked weekly or biweekly in drier weather.
- Drain or remove any water from backyard furniture, kiddie pools, buckets or toys.
- Thoroughly inspect roof gutters, surface channels and drains for blockages.
- Change the water trays of planters and pot plants.
Keep the Pool Flowing
In opposition, constant water circulation is key to reducing bug activity. As well as cleaning the pool, a filter pump helps to discourage insects by keeping water circulating regularly. It is suggested to run the pump in the early mornings and evenings, as research shows that is when insects are most active. If you’re using a skimmer pump, make sure that the basket is emptied once a week to prevent buildup and organic matter that can attract bugs.

Use a Pool Cover
When you aren’t using your pool, a cover becomes the next secure defense. Along with keeping dirt and debris out of the water, a durable pool cover will shield against pesky bugs. Take note to get a cover with drainage holes so that water does not accumulate on top and attract insects.
Although a backyard can never fully be rid of insect life, unwanted buzzing guests are less likely to disturb your peaceful above ground pool experience with these prevention tips and consistent maintenance.
